2009 Senior Citizens Coffee Group

Date 2nd August 2009
Event First Ever Senior Citizen's Coffee Group
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description
It was a memorable and a momentous day for ZANZ on 2nd Aug 2009 when it had its first ever "Senior Citizen's Coffee Group". This event was held at Howick Recreation Club from 10a.m. to 12p.m. Some seniors were transported from their homes/Retirement villages to the above venue by committee members. Big thanks to the members who have volunteered to drive them next time.

We are pleased to say that ZANZ's first attempt to bring our seniors together proved successful. This event was graced by 12 seniors. Unfortunately, we had a few more that wanted to attend, but couldn't due to lack of transport. We have already been contacted by several more regarding our next meeting and many more are likely to join this group when these seniors spread the word around.

We started with a brief introduction by each of us. The seniors then started to enjoy the company of others and relaxed with a cup of coffee or tea served along with snacks. A committee member had graciously prepared banana cake which was relished by all.

Once the mood was set, we asked the seniors what activities we should plan for them in the future. Many were happy playing housie, cards or carrom. Some also mentioned that they would be happy to go out for a picnic. The seniors played housie and were absolutely delighted when they won. We gave away chocolate bars and were surprised that most of the seniors seem to have a sweet tooth. We played 3 games of housie and there was no end to their maja masti and laughter.

A few seniors could not join the group because they work on weekends. Others had transport issues. The session finished at 11:45 a.m. but it was noon by the time we left the venue as nobody wanted to leave.

If you know of any Zarthosti seniors who would like to join this group please contact us. Also, we would appreciate any donation whether it is in the form of money, prizes for games, or transport.

We plan to host this group every 4-6 weeks. It was a soul lifting experience at the end of this session. The seniors had their day and it was a historic day for ZANZ which made seniors feel that they are being cared for, loved and respected by our community.

Date 27th September 2009
Event Second Senior Citizen's Coffee Group
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description
ZANZ held its second Senior Citizen’s Coffee group on 27th September 2009 at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10.00a.m. to 12.00p.m. ZANZ appreciates and understands the role seniors play in our community. With this in mind, this group made its debut on 2nd August 2009 to bring our seniors together.

The seniors exchanged pleasantries and then it was back to “Chalo jov, aapre chai, coffee banavye. Savare chai to hame loko e pidhi, pan paachchi jara sos lagech”. The seniors had their tea/coffee served along with snacks. A thoughtful committee member provided some light entertainment with old Hindi melodious songs in the background.

The group wanted to play housie again so we had four games of housie. The seniors seem to have a penchant for sweets and they made sure that every time they won they had their prize in the form of a chocolate. With chevro and biscuits going around and some fun and laughter being shared by all, it was time to wind up for the day.
We invited suggestions from them as to how they would like to enjoy their next meeting. The seniors would love to play carrom and the ZANZ Management committee would therefore like to ask those members who have a carrom board to share it with us for a day.

Again a few seniors residing in Central Auckland could not attend this time because of transport issues. Thanks to all who volunteered their services for transportation.

We need volunteers to transport seniors who don’t live in the Pakuranga / Howick area.

Big thanks to Anaheeta Sethna for coming and helping out at this event.

Date 13th December 2009
Event Fourth ZANZ Senior Citizen's Coffee Group
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description
ZANZ held its fourth Senior Citizen’s Coffee group on 13th December 2009 at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m.  As this was the last coffee group of 2009, the committee members had made yummy chicken sandwiches and coconut cake which were served with the usual potato chips, biscuits, crackers and of course the mandatory mint and lemongrass tea.

Once the food was out of the way, the seniors played carrom and cards until it was time to go home.  There are some great carrom champions in this group.

We would like to thank Mahrukh Stazyk, Minoo Master and Benifer Irani for generously lending their carrom boards for this event.

Before we wound up for the year, each senior was given a candy cane to enjoy on Christmas.

The ZANZ committee started the Senior Citizen’s Coffee Group in August and the first one was attended by 12 seniors.  We are proud to say that the December event was graced by 23 seniors.  Many of our seniors have told us that they look forward to the coffee group each month.  Unfortunately, there are several seniors who are unable to attend due to a lack of transport.  We still need volunteers to transport seniors who don’t live in the Pakuranga / Howick area.  The committee members can only accommodate a limited number of seniors in our cars. We would like to thank Anaheeta Sethna for providing transportation and helping out at these events.

We currently don’t charge the seniors to attend these events.  All food is provided by committee members at their own cost.  As our numbers are growing, we will soon have to move to a larger venue.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.

We wish all our cherished seniors a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
