2013 Senior Citizens Coffee Group

Date 17th February 2013
Event First Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2013
Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description The first Senior Citizens Coffee Group for the year 2013 was held on 17th Feb at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Fifteen seniors attended this session and they were glad to be back to their usual club.

ZANZ organises this session every month for seniors free of cost. It provides a platform for seniors to meet and socialise and enjoy the companionship in a typical Parsee atmosphere.

We served tea / coffee and snacks to start the day. Later on, Mr Sheriar Irani gave a brief talk on how to manage chronic conditions and live a healthy life. This discussion focussed on how to understand and manage the day to day situations relating to the ailments in a holistic manner. This was just an initial introduction and our seniors were asked if they were interested in pursuing this workshop of six weeks which is conducted under the auspices of Ministry of Health.

We then moved on to playing housie games which our seniors are sentimentally attached to. We played two games and all winners were given away chocolates. Finally it was that time of the day when we wanted to celebrate the birthday of our senior, Mani Mowji. Everyone joined to the tune of the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. There were plenty of snacks available on that day and everyone enjoyed the day.

We would like to convey our thanks to Jimmy and Kashmira Mehta, Roxanne Noble and Roshni Khodaiji for sponsoring this session. Big thanks to Mana and Tehmurasp Vazifdar for bringing sweets and Shernaz Kapadia for bringing ice cream for everyone. Our thanks also go to Paeterasp & Anahita Vevaina, Benifer Irani, Minoo Siganporia and Binaifer Aspar for being volunteers on that day.

Our next senior’s session will be held on 17th March. To celebrate Jamshedi Nowruz, we have decided to provide a delicious lunch followed by a Hindi movie.

Venue Howick Recreation Centre
Description The third Senior Citizens Coffee Group for the year 2013 was held on 19th May at the Howick Recreation Centre from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Eighteen seniors attended this session. We started this session with prayers for our senior Mr Naoroji Kharas who passed away on 29th March. Mr Naoroji Kharas used to come regularly to our SCCGs and enjoyed the camaraderie of this club. God bless his soul!
Our seniors had requested us in the past that they would like to learn the basics of using the computer and the different options of emailing etc. This session was therefore all about getting to know your computer and how to email and use other features.
We served tea / coffee and snacks to start the day. Our member Farzana Anklesaria who kindly volunteered to help our seniors on getting to know the basics of computer joined us later. She gave an excellent demo on the screen which was enjoyed and appreciated by all our seniors. Paeterasp Vevaina proved to be of immense help to us as he arranged for the projector and other electrical accessories to get this show going. The seniors warmed up to this occasion and asked questions, making this session an interactive one.
In this session we celebrated the birthdays of our seniors Mrs Mana Vazifdar, Mrs Nargis Tata and Mrs Perin Daruwalla. Everyone joined to the tune of Happy birthday song. A birthday cake was cut and shared by all our seniors.
We would like to convey our thanks to Jimmy and Kashmira Mehta, Roxanne Noble and Roshni Khodaiji for sponsoring this session. Our thanks also to Paeterasp & Anahita Vevaina, Benifer Irani, Minoo Siganporia and Binaifer Aspar for being volunteers on that day. A great effort was made by Mrs Farzana Anklesaria to put the screen shots and the instructions together and then explain the nous of computer and emails. We thank her for her time and patience!

Date 8th December 2013
Event Tenth Senior Citizen's Coffee Group Meeting of the year 2013
Venue Wright's Water Gardens
Description The last Senior Citizens Coffee Group for the year 2013 was held on 8th December 2013.

It was one of the most enjoyable picnic that our seniors had but was also enjoyed by our volunteers.

The day started with some volunteers picking some seniors from their residence and other seniors requested to meet at Pakuranga plaza. We all gathered at the spot and started off to Patumahoe. It was a fun drive even though the weather kept changing with sudden heavy downpours and next minute beautiful sunshine.

We reached the Wright's water gardens and settled our seniors to start with the most important thing – FOOD!!!!

Thanks to our generous donor (who wishes to remain anonymous), who supplied cheese-ham, vegetable & chicken sandwiches, parsi's favourite-pora pav, kalaiji with nice tamtamata potatoes, sev, dahi and cold drinks.

We then got the seniors to play housie and musical chairs.

Our musician Mr. Tehmurasp Vazifdar played some joyful music on his mouth-organ. (see video below)

Vicaji Taraporewala and Zarine Khambatta had bought cake for the birthdays.
We then celebrated the birthdays of our seniors Vicaji Taraporewala, Zarine Khambatta, Tehmurasp Vazifdar and Minoo Panveliwalla.

Two donors generously donated hand-made chocolates to be given out to seniors / volunteers as Christmas gifts.

It was a beautiful day inspite of the downpour, it was windy but our seniors enjoyed every bit of it. The scenery was beautiful with a waterfall nearby with lots of lotus and water lilies and gold fishes swimming in the waters.

ZANZ would like to thank the volunteers for the day – Anahita Vevaina, Merzi Daruwalla, Cyrus, Rati, Aafreen and Viraf Mehta.

We recently asked one of our regular volunteer, Mr. Minoo Siganporia, as to his motivation for continuing to help out at the Coffee Group Sessions. His response was: "I was in the ZANZ Committee when we decided that it would be good to have an exclusive event for Seniors. Before requesting our members or community for volunteers I thought it would be a good idea to lead from the front. I had also heard amazing tales of volunteers in NZ and hence i decided to put this idealism into practice by joining this fraternity. After my tenure in the ZANZ Committee, I stayed put as a volunteer and have never looked back, abeit lately, the work demands have curtailed my attendance. I guess one quote has stuck with me for a very long time and it is apt to mention this here: 'Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty'."

Our next senior's session will be held on 16th February 2014.
